Chapter 1: The PROCTRM Study Technique. Since developed by the author, in 1995, it has been used in colleges, universities, and high schools with remarkable success. This chapter applies the PROCTRM study skills method to readings beyond the textbook.

These chapters also help the student to more fully understand the PROCTRM study technique.

Chapter 5: Transitions and Patterns of Organization Students can discover the patterns used in text and how to take advantage of that knowledge when decoding information.

Chapter 6: The Reading/Writing Connection Explores the reading/writing connection and provides a very useful three step process that clearly shows how the majority of writers organize their work.

Chapter 7: What Creates a Good Reader? Discusses what it is that makes a good reader and what skills are necessary to obtain that goal.

Chapter 8: Vocabulary in Context Teaches the importance of vocabulary development to the entire reading process.

Chapter 9: Word Parts: Prefixes, Roots, and Suffixes Teaches the importance of learning parts of words and how their meanings can unlock many more words.

Chapter 10: Purpose & Tone Discover why a person writes and how their tone can reveal their attitude toward their subject matter or audience.

Chapter 11: Facts vs. Opinions: Separating facts from opinions, and looking for deeper meaning in the readings comprises this chapter.

About the Author:

Lawrence Scheg is a Reading Specialist currently teaching at Modesto Junior College. His Career started in 1973 as reading instructor for Walter Panas High School in Shrub Oak, New York. He was a pioneer in creating district, state, and federally funded reading labs for that high school.

In 1995, Professor Scheg began a career in teaching reading at the community college level at Santa Barbara City College. He had also taught at Allan Hancock College and Antelope Valley College before coming to MJC in the fall of 2000.

In addition to his community college instruction, Professor Scheg has taught for Chapman University in their graduate level program. There he instructed aspiring teachers in how to implement the teaching of reading and study skills into virtually any curriculum – and at nearly any grade level.
